Full lips have long been considered a symbol of youth, health, and beauty. Unfortunately, our lips often begin to thin as we grow older. Furthermore, some patients were born with thin lips, which may not be proportionate to the rest of their facial features.
WHAT IS A LIP ENHANCEMENT TREATMENT?
Lip enhancement, or lip augmentation, is a procedure that can give you more youthful, plump lips. An injectable dermal filler using hyaluronic acid is the most common method of achieving this.
They can be used to improve not only size, but shape and structure as well. Depending on the product used, the placement, and individual patient’s goals, results can range from a subtle hydrating effect to voluptuous dramatically plump lips.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE APPOINTMENT?
Your dermatologist will determine what kind of filler to use for your lip injections. There are a variety of brands and each may have different results. Your aesthetic goals and health history will help your doctor determine which course of treatment is best for you. At each treatment session, the area is numbed with a topical numbing cream prior to the injection so discomfort is minimized and your doctor will inject dermal filler into or around your lips. You can expect your session to take between 10 and 15 minutes.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARD?
Recovery time is usually no more than a day. Depending on the type of filler used, your results may last anywhere between six months and two years. You may want to use moisturizing lip balm to further augment your lips and to maintain healthy lips.
ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?
Side effects are usually mild and may include bruising, bleeding at the injection site, swelling, and tenderness. If you experience more serious side effects such as infection, nerve damage or an allergic reaction, call your doctor immediately.
